International praise for Danish water park

Vestre Fjord Park, a new, Danish lido, has won an Architizer A+Award and also been shortlisted for a WAF Award. Wood and wood-based products play an important role at the new facility, where many of the buildings have Troldtekt acoustic ceilings.

The 165,000-square-metre Vestre Fjord Park is situated on the shores of the Limfjorden, close to the Danish city of Aalborg in northern Jutland. Visitors to the lido can dive and swim, play ball games, run, do parkour, kayak and relax. The lido has become an extremely attractive summer destination.

The elegant recreational area has been designed by Adept Architects and GHB Landscape Architects – and the architecture has attracted international attention. Vestre Fjord Park has recently been named a Jury Winner by the prestigious Architizer A+Awards, which each year celebrate the world’s best architecture. The area in Aalborg has won in the category ‘Sport & Recreation’ ahead of projects from, for example, Nice in France, Chang Mai in Thailand and Montreal in Canada.

Vestre Fjord Park has also been shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival Award 2018, which are announced in Amsterdam at the end of November.

Wood and Troldtekt

Vestre Fjord Park comprises both buildings and landscaping – and the venue has a clear identity thanks to the use of solid wood materials that have a strong unifying function. All the building facades are clad with Canadian cedarwood strips, and in several places Troldtekt acoustic panels have been installed on the ceilings, so that wood is also a dominant material here.

The lido is divided into six areas. The bathing facility boasts a 50-metre swimming pool and a deeper pool with diving boards, a diving tower and a climbing wall. The lido opened in summer 2017. The total cost of the project was approx. DKK 70 million.
