Troldtekt and Cradle to Cradle Certified®

Troldtekt has been working with the Cradle to Cradle principles as part of our business strategy since 2012 . The design concept and product certification provide the framework for documented sustainability measures and continuous improvements to products and production.

Troldtekt acoustic panels consist of wood and a binder, two raw materials that together form the basis for a robust building material with documented material health and the potential to enter into new cycles.

Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool panels are certified at Gold level in accordance with Cradle to Cradle Certified® version 5.0. This means that the products have been assessed according to the latest version of the standard and have achieved gold in all five categories: Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Carbon Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship, and Social Fairness.

Cradle to Cradle Certified is both documentation of the work we are already doing and a framework for the progress we continue to strive towards.

In brief

From vision to new cycles

The vision behind Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a circular economy, where products are designed so that the materials can be included in new biological or technical cycles.

For Troldtekt, this means working systematically with the materials used in our acoustic panels, as well as their documentation and future use. We document the substances contained in the panels and work on solutions that enable the cement-bonded wood wool to gain new value when panels or offcuts can no longer be used in their original form.

As part of Cradle to Cradle Certified®, Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool has been assessed for material health by an independent third party (EPEA - Part of Drees & Sommer). The assessment documents the substances contained in the cement-bonded wood wool, which is a prerequisite for the material to be safely incorporated into new technical cycles. For example, production waste can be used as a resource in new cement. Troldtekt works with return models that in the longer term can give acoustic panels one or more additional life cycles.

Certification and documentation

Troldtekt acoustic panels are Cradle to Cradle Certified® at Gold level. The certification covers Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool in natural wood and painted in standard colours, including:

  • Troldtekt acoustic
  • Troldtekt design solutions
  • Troldtekt A2
  • Troldtekt agro.

At the latest recertification, Troldtekt achieved gold in all five categories. The certification was carried out in accordance with Cradle to Cradle Certified version 5.0, the latest and most updated version of the standard.

Version 5.0 reflects, among other things, stricter requirements for documentation, material health and chemical legislation. Therefore, the results cannot be directly compared with previous certifications under earlier versions of the standard.

The certificate is valid for three years from July 2026. The certification was carried out with EPEA – Part of Drees & Sommer as an independent assessor, while the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute administers the certification standard.

Five categories for continuous improvement

Cradle to Cradle Certified® assesses products in five categories. Together, they provide a framework for working systematically with materials, circularity, energy and climate, water and soil as well as social conditions.

At Troldtekt, we use the categories as benchmarks for our continuous improvement efforts. This applies to the development of our acoustic panels, production at the factory in Troldhede, and our work with documentation and new cycles.

Material Health

Material health is about knowing the detailed constituent materials of a product and assessing how they affect people and the environment.

As part of Cradle to Cradle Certified, Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool is thoroughly analysed and assessed by third parties. The assessment documents the product’s constituent materials in accordance with the requirements of the standard’s Material Health category, which is a prerequisite for the cement-bonded wood wool to be safely incorporated into new technical cycles.

With version 5.0, the requirements for material health and documentation have been tightened in line with developments in chemical legislation.

At Troldtekt, this is an important part of our continuous improvement efforts, because the certification both documents the material choices we make today and provides direction for our ongoing work. Among other things, we have developed new paint formulas as part of our efforts to optimise the composition and documentation of our products.

When developing products and making decisions about our product range, we also apply the precautionary principle in relation to Cradle to Cradle Certified, the UN Global Compact and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This means that we can rule out solutions where there is uncertainty about how a substance affects people or the environment.

Product Circularity

Product circularity is about designing products and processes so that materials retain their value for as long as possible.

At Troldtekt, we work with circularity in relation to cement-bonded wood wool. This includes waste from our own production, pure cement-bonded wood wool offcuts from customers’ building sites, and used acoustic panels from renovations or demolitions.

The aim is to find solutions as high up the resource hierarchy as possible. Therefore, the best solution is often to retain the Troldtekt ceiling when a building is renovated or transformed. Here, the panels can be painted and repaired on site to extend their service life. Fully functional panels can also gain an extra life cycle in another building.

When direct reuse is not possible, we work with recycling and recovery. Troldtekt has established return schemes for cement-bonded wood wool waste from both our own production as well as building sites in Denmark. For example, production dust can be incorporated into new cement production at Aalborg Portland.

In addition, we focus actively on developing and scaling solutions that, in the long term, will make it possible to reuse, recycle and upcycle more used acoustic panels from demolitions. Such work is carried out through partnerships, new methods and pilot projects.

Clean Air & Carbon Protection

This category concerns reducing the carbon footprint of products and working systematically with energy consumption, emissions and documentation.

For a number of years, Troldtekt has been working purposefully to increase the proportion of renewable energy in production, while also reducing energy consumption per square metre of cement-bonded wood wool produced. In 2025, 98.8 per cent of energy consumption in production came from renewable energy sources: heat from our own bio-boiler, electricity covered by certificates from offshore wind turbines and our own electricity production from solar panels.

We are also working continuously to make better use of energy. An Energy Management System gives us a detailed overview of energy consumption right down to the production-line level, allowing us to identify deviations and prioritise the initiatives that have the greatest impact. During the drying process, we recover heat from the moist air in the drying halls and use it again to dry the acoustic panels.

Because production is largely based on renewable energy, Troldtekt’s direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) are relatively low. The largest share of the CO₂e footprint lies in the value chain (Scope 3), particularly in the binder, which together with wood forms the composition of our panels.

We are working to continue optimising our own operations and to develop products with CO₂e-reduced binders. This applies to both FUTURECEM™ and Troldtekt® LEC binders, which can reduce the footprint of the acoustic panels throughout the product’s life cycle.

Water & Soil Stewardship

The category concerning water and soil focuses on responsible management of water resources, wastewater and the impact on soil.

At Troldtekt, we work with water where it is relevant for our production and factory site. Our factory in Troldhede is not currently located in an area where water scarcity is expected, but we nevertheless focus on using water resources responsibly and avoiding unnecessary strain on groundwater.

Water is also used in the production of Troldtekt acoustic panels, partly because it contributes to the setting of the cement. A large proportion of the water used in production evaporates during the drying process or remains in the panels, which need to acclimatise before installation. With new heat exchangers in the drying plant, we expect to be able to reuse condensation in the casting process and thereby reduce the need for fresh process water.

Social Fairness

Social fairness concerns responsible practices within the company, throughout the value chain and in relation to the people who are part of everyday life at Troldtekt.

At Troldtekt, we want to be a safe, decent and inclusive workplace. This applies both to production in Troldhede, our offices and our cooperation with the suppliers and partners that form part of our value chain.

Employee working conditions are anchored in Troldtekt's HR policy, Works Council (SU) and Occupational Health and Safety committee (AMO). Employees are represented by trades union representatives, and Troldtekt complies with the current collective agreement of the Confederation of Danish Industry. Among other things, we also offer health insurance, workwear and the opportunity for flexible working hours.

In a manufacturing company, the working environment and occupational health and safety are key responsibilities. We therefore work systematically with risk assessments, safety observations, the reporting of near misses, internal training and clear guidelines, so that safety becomes a natural part of everyday life.

We also focus on education, development and inclusion. This includes professional upskilling, specialist knowledge and management training, as well as career opportunities for apprentices, adult apprentices, trainees and student assistants. At the same time, we strive to be an inclusive workplace that accommodates colleagues in flexi-job positions and other forms of supportive employment.

Troldtekt is closely connected to Troldhede. We therefore also work to minimise inconveniences from production, maintain good dialogue with our neighbours and make a positive contribution to the local community of which we are a part.
